Our application process is markedly different than most independent schools.
Tours of CCS begin in the Fall and applications are available at that time. Applications can be submitted any time before the deadline (January 27, 2012).
After the application deadline, Children’s Community School sends our senior staff members to over 40 local preschools (and elementary schools for older applicants) to observe applicant students in an environment that is comfortable for them. They do not know they are being observed and they are not expected to perform in any way. We do not think that “playdates” in unfamiliar surroundings or with unfamiliar adults and children is a good way to get to know your child.
We also do not require parents to interview with us as a part of our admissions process although we welcome a meeting if the parents request it. Prospective families are welcome to address a letter to the the Admissions Committee if they choose telling them anything they think might be of interest to the Committee regarding their family and desires for their child’s education. Again, we strive to be sensitive to the stressful nature of independent school admissions on the entire family.
Finally, after a student has been accepted to CCS and their family has chosen CCS for their child, we arrange for a short visit by the child to the campus (in May) with their new teacher. Students are given a simple tour and encouraged to ask any questions they might have. This is followed by some pre-arranged contact with the school community during the Summer. We have found over the 30 year history of CCS that this process is both practical and reasonable for the child and the parents.
CCS is a members of the Elementary Schools Admissions Directors (ESAD) and subscribes to the good practices recommended by this group.
