Children's Community School 2007-2008 School Calendar is now online and can be accessed at by clicking on "calendar" on the left side of this page. A couple of changes from our usual calendar are as follows:

1. The School year is going to begin on September 5, 2007. This is earlier than usual due to the dates of the Jewish holidays and our transition schedule for new students. In our experience, having the first days of school conflict with any major religious holidays is problematic, since we then effectively exclude students from those first, important days, so we have moved the first week of school one week earlier. It does require the staff to return early, and I appreciate their flexibility.

2. You'll notice that even though the school year starts earlier than usual, it doesn't end any earlier. This is because the staff has discussed the need for additional "pupil free" days to accomodate our new mid-year report schedule (instituted last year). There will be more days than usual on which students are not in class (identified on the calendar as "writing days") so that staff may dedicate themselves to the writing of student assessments. These days are in addition to "in-service" days which are set aside for the staff to engage in educational discussions and workshops, visit other schools, attend conferences and seminars, and any number of things related to Professional Development.

3. However, CCS is aware that "pupil free" days can be difficult for families for a variety of scheduling issues. To address this issue, CCS is happy to be offering special programming at CCS on writing and in-service days that will be supervised by Susan Swarthout and our After-School staff. The cost of these activities will generally be the same as afterschool, and you'll get much more information about programming, staffing and signing up during the School year.
