CCS Staff Works on Wisconsin Curriculum

By Heather | February 23, 2011 |

During the last weekend (February 18 & 19), six CCS staff members travelled to Chicago to participate in the North Dakota Study Group meeting.  This professional development opportunity allowed Robyn Lawrence, Lynn Kuratomi, Angela Lloyd, Lindsey Young, Sarah Day and Stephanie Del Barco to immerse themselves in their progressive practice with educators from around the country.

While they were there, the Madison, Wisconsin protests were in full force and practically next door!  Some of our CCS staff made the trip to Wisconsin to support fellow teachers while some stayed behind and wrote a curriculum for Teachers, Parents and Educators to use to talk to elementary school students about the issues in Wisconsin and why they’re important.  This curriculum is now being used by educators nation-wide and we’re so proud of our CCS teachers who thought of the children first (of course!).

Math is not equal to Calculating

By Heather | November 22, 2010 |

Here’s another TED talk.  Some big thinkers are really pondering why math is so disdained by students of so many ages.  I’m not sure about his answer to the problem, but there is a problem:  http://www.ted.com/talks/conrad_wolfram_teaching_kids_real_math_with_computers.html?utm_source=newsl

What is Progressive Education?

By Heather | November 04, 2010 |

This question gets asked a lot - by prospective parents and even current ones.  In this article by prominent progressive educator Alfie Kohn, he does a pretty good job at outlining what a progressive school should look like:  Alfie Kohn on Progressive Education.

Ken Robinson talks about Education and Creativity

By Heather | October 26, 2010 |

Ken Robinson did a well known speech at the TED conference, but here’s another of his riffs about education - this time it’s animated.  It makes it really watchable and easier to understand.

In short, in explains some fundamental assumpations about education that just don’t wash:  Ken Robinson Animated Video

TED talks about Math Curriculum

By Heather | October 11, 2010 |

Progressive education has always emphasized understanding of math concepts.  We think that students who have their underlying reasoning skills in place will be well prepared for complex math in a classroom and in life.  But that’s not how most of America learns math.  Check out this talk from TED speaker Dan Myer on how he’d remake how most students learn math:  TED talks about a Math Makeover

CCS Gets Some Press

The Examiner’s Progressive Education Contributor, Grace Hess-Quimbita, has posted three blog entries about CCS.  It’s great to be recognized as a progressive school that’s really holding fast to our values.  Check it out here:
