Children's Community School is a progressive elementary school in Van Nuys, California, north of Los Angeles. For 25 years, CCS has stressed hands-on learning, a diverse environment, and involvement with the community around it. Guided by its founding director, the staff, and its board of directors, CCS looks forward to the future. Admissions applications are accepted and evaluated on a year-round basis.

Building the future block by block

For over two decades, Children's Community School has pursued our mission in the same physical space in which the school was founded.

The Board of Directors has recognized for some time that growing the School to 125 students will allow CCS to flourish both philosophically and economically. With about 100 students (a third of whom receive tuition assistance), 25% growth will allow the School to reach optimal size.

For the physical site to match the excellence of our educational programs, the School community has engaged in a design process with architects Roschen Van Cleve and Pinnacle Contractors. Teachers, parents, administrators and even the children have met with the architects to create the “ideal campus” for CCS. There is more design work to do, but a good framework is in place. Click here to download or view the architects' drawing of Phase One of the new school campus (pdf).

We are building from the ground up for the first time in our school’s history. Retaining the physical attributes of the campus that are beloved and creating new spaces for learning has been a challenging and exhilarating process. And it has required our community to come together as never before.

Some of the plans include:

  • A new multipurpose room: Our current auditorium is much-loved, but our new 2,800 square foot, flexible multi-purpose room will provide enough space for our entire community to comfortably gather as well as allow the music and dance programs room to realize their potential.
  • New and larger classrooms: With group work being such an important part of a CCS education, our new classrooms, which double in size, create more educational possibilities.
  • A renovated library: With the devotion of our expert volunteers, our library deserves more space, more nooks, more crannies and more flexibility. Our new library doubles in size and allows designated areas for different kinds of readers – from picture books to computer desks.
  • A renovated kitchen: Math, reading, culture studies, and social interaction all happen in the kitchen. Our new 560 square foot kitchen will allow an entire group to gather at once to participate in a recipe.

CCS is dynamically seeking solutions to challenges and engaging the community in those solutions as well. As families who began the School created a legacy for those enjoying a CCS education today, we welcome new families to join us in securing the future of our School by participating in the design of the new campus and contributing to our Capital Campaign.
